Founded in 1935 with a currenmt membership of 40 playing and social members, the club is always keen to attract new members - the club offers free membership to first time bowlers for the first year. Colin Davidson, our England Bowls Association Coach, is rightly very proud of the high quality of our green.
Practice sessions or 'roll-ups' take place on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from about 5.00pm to 7.00pm, and Wednesday mornings from 10.00am. (the season starts at the end of April and finishes at the beginning of September) but new members can be shown around the club at other times if contact is made with the secretary (Brian Butcher- tel 07807 403316 or email [email protected]) or other members of the club. After the first year members will have access to the club and green by means of their own keys.
You will find us at the Recreation Ground off Orchard Close St Ippolyts following Mill Lane and then Mill Road if you come from Gosmore or following the signs to the Recreation Ground if coming from the Codicote Road. There is ample and free parking next to the green. Click on 'contact' to view map and find precise location.
The club's principal matches are played in the Stevenage Mixed League (ladies and men) on Saturday and Sunday afternoons. There are thirteen teams competing in this league with fixtures played at home and away - St Ippolyts won the league in 2017, 2022 & 2023, were runners-up in 2019 & 2021 and came third in 2016 & 2018; and in 2016, 2018, 2019, 2021 won the Stevenage Mixed League Knockout Competition & were runners up in 2022 & 2023. No SML Matches or Competitions were played in 2020.
The men also play matches in the Hertfordshire County League and in 2021 & 2022 reached the Divisional Semi-Finals.
The ladies play in the North Hertfordshire Women's Association - and won the League in 2018 and were runners-up in 2022.
In addition, members can participate in friendly matches and club competitions in a variety of formats with a 'Finals Day' held at the beginning of September.
Coaching is provided by our England Bowls Association coach Colin Davidson.
The club attaches a high importance to its standing in the local community and in keeping members in touch with one another, particularly during the off- season. 'Casino' or 'Race Evenings' are arranged with fish and chip dinners, a Macmillan's fund raising coffee morning has been held annually as well as birthday celebrations and an Xmas get together. During the summer a 'Fun Day' is organised for all comers including children. The ' Vicar's Cup' marks the start of the season when again members of the community are invited to participate in a friendly informal game or just to try the game for the first time.
