New Members' Guide
New Members' Guide
Welcome to St Ippolyts Bowls Club, hopefully this information will be helpful.
We are a small friendly club that plays in the Stevenage and District Mixed League, Ladies play in the North Herts Ladies League and the Ladies County League. The men play in the Mens County League. There are also inter club competitions which are organised by Herts Bowls and Letchworth & District Bowls associations. During the season we play friendlies against local teams, these are usually played during the week in the afternoon. Refreshments are provided at matches and there is usually a raffle.
Throughout the year we run our own internal club competitions in a range of different formats culminating in a finals weekend in September and a presentation evening later in the year.
Our England Bowls Association Coach is available to give one to one coaching .
We encourage all new members to take part in our friendly matches if and when you feel confident. In the club house you will find on the main fixture board a match sheet for each game telling you when, where, who we are playing and time of each match. Just add your name to the sheet and the captain will select the team and post a finalised list of players who should tick their name on the sheet to show they are aware of their selection. All Ladies league matches are displayed on the Ladies fixture board where you can put your name down for selection. Spectators are welcome at all matches.
Roll Ups
Roll ups are held on a Tuesday and Thursday evening from 5pm to 7pm, these are open to everyone and are free of charge, a chance to practise and also catch up socially. Wednesday mornings are a chance also to have a roll up and a chat. Once you have your own set of keys (see below) you are welcome to have a Roll up at other times, but note the green is not available until lunchtime on Tuesday and Thursday to allow for green maintenance in the morning. Maintenance is sometimes carried out on Saturday. We have also introduced Turn Up & Play sessions (normally evening of last Friday of the month) where members have the chance to practise in a competitive format.
Charges
The club charges a small fee for playing in most competitions and league and friendly competitions. (these are known as rink fees).
Dress
There is no dress code for roll ups only flat shoes, but friendlies and league games we ask that you wear black trousers/shorts (unless stated) and a white shirt/club shirt
Keys and Equipment
After a time you can apply for a set of keys, these are available for a small deposit, these open the gate to the green and the club house. The barrier onto the recreation ground has a combination padlock (you will be given the code). Please ensure that the padlock is locked, even when the barrier is left open.
Inside the club house there is a key to open the equipment shed, where there is a store of different weight and size woods for you to try before buying your own.
Social and Other
We have our own small bar, and during the year the club holds barbecues, quiz nights and social gatherings.
The club runs a bonus ball scheme where you choose a number and if it comes up on a Saturday Lotto draw you win £20, this costs £1 a week, paid in 10 week blocks.
