THE ST IPPOLYTS BOWLER

Welcome to what is certainly to be the only Newsletter of 2020.

After what is proving to be a difficult time for everyone, here is a summary of 2020 at the Bowls Club.

We were one of the first clubs in Hertfordshire to reopen their green to members in May, and the further easing of Government restrictions enabled us to organise a couple of competitions. Congratulations to Terry Godden in winning the Singles, with Keith Bounsall as runner up, and to Paul Owen & Kevin Stollery in taking the Pairs title, winning all of their 8 games, with Shirley Hughes & Terry Godden finishing in second place; Keith Bounsall and John Dudley third.

A big thank you to all those who were able to take part.

We were fortunate enough to receive a grant of almost £2000 from the Sport England Community Fund which goes some way to make up for the loss of revenue this season. With the prospect of no play this year members were asked for minimum donation of £20, in lieu of their membership fees, and it is pleasing to find that the majority opted to pay the full membership amount. Peggy Hall bequeathed the club a substantial amount which will be held for the future and another generous donation received enabled the purchase of a new lawn mower.

Unfortunately we were unable to hold a MacMillan Coffee Morning in September, however, Barbara would like to thank everyone who generously made a cash donation. This raised £174 – thank you for your support.

We wish Muriel and Terry all the best following their departure to Norfolk, they will be sorely missed. We welcome Ian Hanks to the Club and thank him for stepping in to cover in the Pairs competition.

On a sadder note, we lost Bill May in April and the following month Peter Reynolds passed away and then, in August, Tony Hall. The Club sent donations in their memory to The Alzheimer's Society, Chron's & Colitis UK and Dreamflights respectively. Chron's & Colitis UK sent us some forget-me-not seeds, which are in the care of Kevin Stollery, so we will have some flowers around the green as a reminder of Peter.

Looking to the future, our customary AGM can not take place and we will look to hold a deferred AGM at the beginning of March if possible before the start of a new season. In the meantime, it is hoped our existing committee members will agree to continue in their roles. When we are able to elect a new committee, we will at the very least, require a new mid-week captain and also a new ladies captain.

Bonus Ball payments are due on 24th October and then again the first week of January 2021. If paying direct to the club bank account, please drop Celia a message when you make your payment (per email circulated 4th October).

Deadline for Herts Bowls 2021 competition entries is end of November – details will be circulated by email.

The Christmas Hamper and Turfcare Hamper raffles will not take place this year, with prizes rolled over to next year.

A big thank you to Colin, Darcy, Jeff, Keith, Kevin, Tony and Trevor (apologies to anyone who may have been overlooked) for their work on and around the green. Without their help play would not have been possible.

Finally, we hope you all stay safe and have a Merry Christmas, and we look forward to seeing you in the New Year.
